Other things not to miss while in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Apart from the important places to visit in Phnom Penh, there are still a few nice things to do while there.

1. Run after pigeons in the park.

Wincee said it was her dream to have a lot of birds flying around her. Well, this definitely was ticked off her bucket list. There were a lot of pigeons feeding at the time we were walking towards the Grand Palace. We didn't mind the skin stabbing heat and took time with the flying creatures.

A few meters ahead from the park is the riverside area. The place greatly reminded me of Dumaguete City's boulevard. A lot of benches were positioned to face the river and flags of different countries were lined in its edges. We just spent just a few minutes to take the view.

2. Relish Cambodian dishes

It only follows that when in another country, we have to taste their cuisine. (Although, sometimes I still get tempted to eat fast food.) We tried Cambodia's major culinary tradition - the amok. It is a thick soup cooked with fish, meat, some vegetables and coconut milk. Guests can choose to have beef, fish, chicken or even seafood. In this picture, the chicken amok is placed inside a hollowed pineapple. This definitely tastes better than it sounds.

A clearer view but this time it's Beef Amok.

Don't forget to order some Cambodian iced coffee. Cambodian coffee tastes very strong compared to those at Vietnam. I forgot if I was the one who ordered the plain coffee and Wincee ordered it with a little bit of milk.

3. Chill at one of the roof top restaurants.

We splurged a bit by going to a roof top bar and restaurant. Sure, it was pretty expensive but seeing the nice view from above was fine in this once in a life time trip.

4. Ride a tuktuk to go around town.

A lot of tuktuk drivers around town can be seen offering tours. We asked a local travel company to get one for us. The driver patiently waited for us while we took our time learning about their history inside S21 and the killing fields.

While riding the tuktuk, we saw the Central Market from afar. There was no time to go in so I just took this shot.

5. Shop at their markets.

Although we haven't gone inside their Central Market, we were still lucky to have gone to 2 other markets. One was the Russian Market named because of the predominant Russian expat population who frequented the place in the 1980s. I was not able to take a photo because they were already closing down at 5pm. We just hurriedly bought our ref magnet souvenirs.

The night before we were to leave the city, we hiked from our hotel to the night market. The products here were a little bit expensive as they have tourist clients. It was just a small place with a few stalls selling food, clothes and souvenirs. We managed to buy pajamas after quite a haggling here.

I know there must still be a lot of things to do in Phnom Penh. Since we only stayed for 2 days, these were the best we can fit with our time.

Thank you for your time and 'til next blog! :)
