3 Places not to miss near Bangkok

I love Bangkok but it is also worth it to discover what's outside of this big bustling city. I'm happy to have the opportunity to travel and would like to give suggestions to future travelers that there are also nice places outside of Bangkok. I know there are a lot but here are 3 of  which I went to:

1. Ayutthaya

The full name of the place is Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. It is 85 km north of Bangkok. Accessible by minibus and trains, this is popular for daytrips from Bangkok. As an avid fan of UNESCO world heritage sites, I kept this on my bucketlist and fulfilled it. My story here.

2. Hua Hin

About 199km southwest of Bangkok is the lovely Hua Hin. It is a beach resort town popular for Bangkok residents to have a getaway to. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the name means "Stone Head" after the rocks at the north end of the powdery sand beach. Me and 4 of my friends went there for a 2 day getaway and I've detailed the story here.

3. Pattaya

Another resort city but this time located 100 kilometers south east of Bangkok is Pattaya. It is a major tourist destination in Thailand where there are a lot of entertainment and activities. Me and my friend went for a short trip and you can see it here.

I wanted to visit another place called Kanchanaburi but maybe during the next time I come to Thailand. I hope this inspires you to visit these places soon! Thank you for reading and 'til next blog :)

Our stay at Basaya Beach Resort and Hotel, Pattaya

Since we would only stay for a night in Pattaya, we had to make sure we would be satisfied with our accommodation. I sought the help of popular hotel booking sites for places to stay. The first thing I look for in hotels is their proximity to the city center or proximity to bus/ train stations. This would enable me to plan our itinerary well because good transportation saves time and money. Being close to the city center also saves time and gives a good reason to just walk to places making it an exercise too.

The second important thing I'd look for in hotels is their inclusive breakfast buffet. I'm a die hard fan of breakfasts. My favorite feeling is waking up on my hotel bed and not having to think of where to get my first meal of the day.

The third and most important thing that I look for in hotels is their ratings and reviews. Reading from a lot of reviews about a particular hotel can give an insight on how it feels like to be there as well as know the things to watch out for. Well, these are just my hotel qualifications and I'd like to take my time to choose one. I'd like to say that these were met by Basaya Beach Resort and Hotel in Pattaya.

Our hotel had an on going promotion and instead of paying around 1800THB per night per room, we only paid 1120THB. They offered guests with their nice pool area.

This is the view from our room's window. Our room was on the far right side of the building so there is not much of it. I guess having rooms in the center would have been much better. One thing I'd like to note is that their rooms could use a little bit of fixing up. The hallways need a bit of repainting, too.

What is directly opposite our room was the dining/ restaurant area. I was very happy to have their breakfast buffet that I forgot to take a photo of my plate. They offered sausages, bacon and eggs, cereals, fruits and a salad bar. They also served different kinds of bread and I particularly liked their egg tart which was very soft and yummy.

Another nice thing about this place is that it is only a 5 minute walk to Central Mall Pattaya which was right in front of the beach. This also means that there are a lot of food choices since there is also a number of restaurants and bars along the road.

We did quite a hike from our hotel to Pattaya Walking Street but it was fun to see the place and people at night. The journey took us about 20 minutes. (But I took this photo on our way back.)

Upon reaching the famous Walking Street, we had to enter these pillars.

Walking Street Pattaya is famous for having all kinds of entertainment. There were restaurants, disco bars and cabaret shows and more.

Here are awesome things we saw:

A very busy walkway with a lot of neon lights from establishments luring tourists and customers.

A car on the wall.

An Ice Bar we didn't enter.

And a catchy statement on one of the bars.

We didn't go into any of the bars as we were already tired from the whole day walking. We just decided to head back to our hotel to look for a massage parlor. We ended up the night by having an oil massage from one of the establishments near our hotel.

Thank you for your time. 'Til next blog! :)

Short trip to Pattaya

We decided to take a very short trip to Pattaya to experience being in the place and look into another part of Thailand. From the sources, Pattaya is a popular beach resort on the Gulf of Thailand and 150 km south of Bangkok. It has been popular for its well known pulsating night life but is now being reinvented to become a more family friendly destination.

We flew from Phuket to Bangkok thru Bangkok Airways and landed in Suvarnabhumi Airport.  We then located gate number 8 to buy for our tickets to Pattaya. The buses run every hour from here and costs 130THB. We tried to catch  the 12 noon bus but was unsuccessful so we waited for the 1pm bus. While waiting, I sought to find an outlet so I can charge my phone and play COC. :)

Travel to Pattaya is usually 1 hour and a half but because of traffic, the bus company provided us expectation that it will take 2 hours. I slept for almost half the trip and woke up in Pattaya City at around 3pm. We then caught a tuktuk to our hotel and paid a total of 150THB to reach Basaya Beach Resort and Hotel.

After settling down and freshening up, we went out and explored what we can in the city. Our hotel was  only a short walk to the beach. We marveled at the sight of the city from our spot near the shoreline. It felt as if we were in another country.

We were starved because we haven't had lunch yet. Thankfully, we were near their Central Festival Mall. It was strategically located as it was near the beach and there were escalators outside which offered tourists the view while going up per floor. This was the view from the 3rd floor.

After lunch, we negotiated for a taxi to take us to Buddha Mountain and Silverlake Vineyard. They said it was quite far and since the driver would wait for us, we agreed to pay 1000THB.

The drive to Silverlake Vineyard/ Winery was about 25 minutes. It was quite far from Central Pattaya but when we reached the place, there were a lot of cars and people. It was a Sunday, so the crowd  was expected.

On the way to the main entrance there were already a lot of picturesque views. We spent a few minutes to take some photos.

Upon entering the place, we were greeted with a thick crowd. They were either talking or eating food from the cute little Italian inspired shops. We wanted to walk further to the fields and explore more of what is offered by the place. We found this signage for the Vineyard tour.

It was already 5pm and the place would close by 6pm. We didn't have interest in wine tasting so we chose package B. After paying 100THB at the counter and getting a token, we were asked to board one of the trams on the right side to wait for other tourists wanting the same package tour.

The wait was not that long as tourists started to fill in the empty seats. The first place we were brought to was the grape juice plant. From the glass windows, we saw the machines they used to extract the grape juice and how they processed and bottled these for the consumers. We exchanged our tokens to have one grape juice bottle.

On the way to the vineyard, we stopped by this lovely view.

The tram then traveled a few meters away and brought us to where we can visit a part of the vineyard in greenhouses. This area is where Buddha Mountain can already be seen.

The houses farther ahead from me is where guests can stay overnight if they'd like. We didn't go to take a closer look of the accommodation as we were excited to see what's inside the greenhouses.

Wow! Grapes and lots of them. This is the first time I saw them hanging in their vines up close and personal :)

The driver then drove us back towards the ticketing counter. We alighted a few meters before the drop off point so we can stop and take in the view for the last time.

We didn't ask for our taxi driver to drop us at the Buddha Mountain which was next door because we already saw the view. Instead, we asked him to drop us off at Pattaya Walking Street. This will be next up on my blog. Thank you for your time :)
